Touring the
US and Japan during 2003-2005, Black Ships & Samurai
introduces Commodore Perry’s mission to Japan in 1853-1854.
Based on John W. Dower’s Core Exhibit, images from
Japan and the US are shown together for the first time to
illuminate both sides of the momentous encounter.
The exhibit is presented by MIT in partnership with the
Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the US Consulate
System In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Commodore
Perry’s expedition to Japan.
