The Black Ship Scroll is a 30-foot long scroll (
emaki) painted in Shimoda, one of two treaty ports opened in 1854 as a result of Commodore Matthew Perry's mission to long-secluded Japan. Several versions of this lively and often humorous scroll were circulated to satisfy curiosity about the foreigners.
